There are only a few things worse than losing a phone, misplacing a phone can make a person feel almost empty. There is a general sense of unease that comes immediately you realize your device is gone. We all know that these days phones are used for so much more than making calls and sending/ receiving messages. As such, the thoughts of a stranger having access to all the data on your phone when it goes missing could make you feel stripped of everything. A recent study shows that over 60 million phones are lost each year. Without a SIM card, GPS location or Internet access, it may seem like all is lost when your phone goes missing. But do you know that you can use the IMEI number to track your lost Android phone?
How? Join me as we first understand the meaning of IMEI.
What is IMEI?
IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is a 15-digit code that is specific and unique to a mobile phone authorized by GSMA. Every phone, unless it is counterfeit, has an (IMEI). it can be used to find a phone when it’s lost or has been stolen. Just like an identity certificate for your phone. Every time a phone uses a particular network to make or receive a call, send or receive a message, its IMEI number is automatically emitted and tracked.
For instance, if a mobile phone is stolen, the owner can easily call the network provider and instruct them to “blacklist” the phone using its IMEI number because they have the database. This renders the phone useless on that network, whether or not the phone’s SIM has been changed for another. In essence, a number can be blacklisted after a theft if the owner reports with IMEI number.
Tracking a missing phone can be daunting especially when methods like bluetooth tracer or GPS locator is used to locate smart phones because of distance limitations. But with an IMEI number and an anti-theft tracker one can turn the phone into a brick for the thief no matter the distance.
So how do you get an IMEI number on your phone?
This is a very easy procedure. The universal method for checking your IMEI, which will work on an iPhone, an Android phone, and any other phone is to dial *#06#, a command to make the unique ID appear.
Another easy way to find the IMEI number is to navigate through “Settings” and tap “About Phone” to check the IMEI code of your Android phone.
In most cases, the IMEI number exists on the reverse side of a phone, or underneath the removable battery. If your phone is lost, but its packaging is kept, you are still able to find the IMEI number on the label. Please note that if your phone supports two SIM cards at the same time, there are two different IMEI numbers.
Run IMEI Check for Your Phone
So now that you have your IMEI, you want to do something with it, right? There are plenty of sites where you can enter your phone’s IMEI number – such as imei.info – and in return you’ll get a list of exact specifications and information about your device. Another site, imeipro.info, allows you use your IMEI number to check whether your phone has been blacklisted/reported as lost or stolen, It’s always good to check this if you’re buying a secondhand phone.
Having checked this, shall we now track our missing device?
Locate your lost phone with an IMEI tracker App
There are many phone finder apps available for you on Google Play, such as Anti-Theft App & IMEI Tracker All Phone Location, Find Lost Phone, Find My Device, SeekDroid: Find My Phone, and a lot more. Anyways Let’s use the Anti-theft App to analyze these with a step by step procedure.
Read and practice carefully.
STEP 1: Search for “IMEI tracker” in Google Play, find “Anti-Theft App & IMEI Tracker All Phone Location” on your phone. Make sure your phone is running on Android 4.4 or higher. Then, start installing the app.
STEP 2: Now that you have finished the installation, run the application. Give all the permissions that the app asks for, including contacts, calls, storage, SMS, and location. In case you need to track your phone, all these permissions will be necessary to activate full functionality.
STEP 3: Press “continue” to move on after watching a short commercial. This free app is great, but the only problem is that it contains ads that you have to watch. Unfortunately, you cannot skip the ads, so make sure to view it. If the video is not yet loaded, you will not be able to go to the next step.
STEP 4: Input the IMEI number of your lost Android phone, check your input, and tap “Track”. A small window with a list of places will appear, indicating the location and the close proximity of your phone.
Kindly note that using the IMEI number to track the lost phone is not the only function of an IMEI tracker. There are also some important anti-theft functions that you should know about.
To protect your device further and before the theft ensure you set the PIN number and remember it. Thus, you can control the stolen phone by sending the corresponding codes to make it give out alarms, send SMS about its real-time location, sync data to the device you are using and more.
In all, I hope the above listed steps and information helps you know your IMEI number and track it when needed. In fact as you read, try the code *#06#, write your IMEI number somewhere safe, where it can be easily accessible, definitely not on your phone. You never know when it will come in handy. It is as important as the phone.
